Course description

The Certificate in Teaching English to Young Learners (CertTEYL) is an on-line, distance teacher education course with 5 modules (approximately 30 hours of independent study) concentrating on specific aspects of teaching young learners. The course covers the roles of the young English learner and teacher, resources and materials used in the classroom, and skills used to facilitate an effective learning environment. It also guides trainees through the challenges of curriculum design and prompts trainees to consider how they can continue their professional development regarding teaching young learners.

The course is geared for individuals with little or no young learner experience. However, candidates should have an initial certificate in TEFL and some classroom teaching experience. Participants are assigned to a trainer who provides consultation and feedback on each module and associated assignments.

There are 5 modules and each module has 3-5 tasks. These tasks are intended to guide you to formulating your own ideas on teaching young learners and then completing the two assessed assignments and three projects.

  • Module 1: The Young English Learner and Teacher
  • Module 2: Teaching Environments
  • Module 3: Classroom Management
  • Module 4: Course books and Other Resources
  • Module 5: Lesson Planning and Syllabus Design
